January

Greetings Everyone! Well, here we are in another new year and with it comes a big change for the Healing Light Spiritualist Church. The HLSC Board of Directors has decided to move the church services to the Etna Town Hall beginning the first Sunday in February. So this month will be last at the Temple on the Camp Etna grounds. Things are changing at Camp Etna and the church is being affected by these changes. It is unlikely that HLSC will return to the Temple in the future, however, anything is possible. It is with a sad heart that we leave the Temple and move to the town hall, however, let us endeavor to think positive thoughts moving forward. Nothing is static in the universe and as situations change we must change with them. Please know this, each of you holds a special place in our hearts and we hope you will continue to attend church services once we have made the move. On a personal note, I was not given a voice in this decision and had I been I would have suggested a different direction, none the less I am choosing to see it as a spiritual growth experience/challenge. The shift in where we hold services can bring us down or it can spur us to THINK BIG! Whatever we focus on expands so let's focus on new and positive growth experiences coming our way. We may not know where this new growth experience will take us yet, but if we think lofty thoughts we truly can soar to great heights. And, just so you have something to pin your lofty thoughts to, let's visualize our church having a place of it's very own. Let's dream BIG, and see ourselves in a building that will be our "Forever Home". A home not tied to the rules and regulations of another organization or tethered to the whims of individuals who may not be as progressive as we are. Our church is a very "forward thinking" church and the rate at which we are taking in new members reflects what people want and need spiritually. Let us continue to stretch our vision and expand our consciousness so we can continue to be a beacon of light for all to see. Spirit is guiding us, all we have to do is listen. See you in church! More News As everyone knows we are experiencing extremely cold temperatures. Because of this we canceled the last service in December. Please be aware that we may need to cancel future church services if this continues. If you are unsure of whether or not a service has been canceled you can check on FB, or check your email. If a service has been canceled these are the two places where you will definitely receive notification. If we are canceling due to snow I will post this on WLBZ 2 local news as well. Please keep in mind that if church service is canceled so is the Sunday afternoon mediumship development circle. Sunday, January 7th is Pot Luck Sunday. Come enjoy church service then stay after for a bite to eat and good conversation with like-minded folks. All are welcome! Linda Homes has graciously offered to host a weekly spiritual/metaphysical group on Friday nights at her home in Palmyra beginning January 19th. The focus of the group will be whatever the attendees decide on. What do you want to explore? What do you want to learn? What do you want to experience? Some topics to consider would be: mediumship, trance channeling, crystals (energetic properties and use of), shamanic journeying, UFO's, remote viewing, meditation, table tipping, ghosts and apparitions, dowsing, various types of healing work, animal communication, chanting, crystal bowls, tarot cards, scrying, sacred geometry, oracle boards, the hollow earth theory, The Law of One (RA Material), tea leaf reading... The list goes on and on. The only requirement is that you come with an open mind and the curiosity of a child. The first gathering will be on January 19th at 7:00 PM. A free will offering to cover refreshments is welcome. Please call or email Linda if you plan to attend as space is limited. Happy February Everyone! I hope everyone has/is managing the energy of the Super Blood Blue Moon full lunar eclipse (Wow, that's a mouth full!) which occurred on January 31st. It was packed with energy! Here is just a little bit about it taken from the "Forever Conscious" web site. "The January Super Blood Blue Moon Eclipse is not only going to help bring resolution and closure to the last half of 2017, it is also going to open and activate a new energy that we are all going to be working with until the next round of Eclipses in July and August 2018." If you want to learn more about this event you can check it out here: http://foreverconscious.com/intuitive-astrology-super-blood-blue-moon-eclipse-january-2018. Happy Spring Everyone! It always gives me great pleasure to say Happy Spring! As we all know, winters are long and usually harsh in Maine but Mainers are tough and most of us would not trade winter for the big city, ever! If you have ever lived in a big city, or lived in a highly populated state and had to travel to and from a big city, you will understand completely what I am saying here. So, while at the same time we are wishing winter away, lets be thankful that we are at least experiencing it in Maine and not New Jersey or Massachusetts. News We are now holding church services in the Etna Town Hall. The town hall is located at 17 Shadow Lane in Etna. Service starts at 10:30 AM. Sunday, March 4th, is Pot Luck Sunday. April

Happy Spring and Happy Easter! Recently I was talking to a friend, a very close friend, and she told me she has been experiencing a tremendous amount of anxiety both at work and at home. This friend is someone who has juggled many things with ease for as long as I have known her, which is approximately 33 years. The problems of depression and anxiety are major growing concerns in our society. In my reading this week I came across this piece written by John Dear and thought it worth sharing. John Dear invites us into a peaceful, nonviolent way of living with creation: To grow in deeper, loving awareness of our sisters and brothers, the beautiful creatures, and wonders of creation, we practice the art of mindfulness. That means we try not to live in the past or stew over the future. We give ourselves to the present moment of peace and return to the gentleness of our breath as a way to return to the present moment, the eternal now. The Buddhists teach mindful living, mindful eating, mindful walking, mindful working. Every moment becomes an opportunity to step into the present moment of peace. “We are speaking of an attitude of the heart,” Pope Francis writes, “one which approaches life with serene attentiveness, which accepts each moment as a gift from God to be lived to the fullest." May each of us experience the ability to accept "each moment as a gift from God to be lived to the fullest." News I will be away from April 13th until April 27th. Please contact one of the other pastors should a ministerial need arise. The Mediumship development group will not meet on April 15th or 22nd. At this point I cannot take anyone else into my mediumship development group as I have reached the size limit for my cottage . When this changes I will let your know via the newsletter. May

Welcome to May Everyone!l Rev. Wachian Welch here writing the May HLSC newsletter while Rev. Janet Decker takes a much-needed vacation. Please see the “Ongoing” section for information on the development group etc The flowers are peaking thru and in some cases, actual flowers in the south facing sun have blossomed. Garden centers are getting shipments of beautiful blue, purple, and yellow flowers, how wonderful it is! I can’t help but take a deep breath and smile when I see them. Spring is often celebrated as a time of releasing, renewal and growth, it can be felt in the air. We can do this any time of the year but in the spring, it just feels right. It seems that we have extra energy and focus to be physically active to take action and create change. It’s also a great time to envision endless possibilities and to use our creative gifts to reach new levels of achievement, wellness, happiness, and success. Spring is also a good time to let go of the old and make room for the new. This applies to the traditional spring cleaning but most importantly we need to apply it to letting go of old grudges, resentments, anger, or fears that hold us back from enjoying inner peace and more happiness in our lives. By holding onto the old energies, we keep ruminating and revisiting those energies that keep us stuck. Sometimes we aren’t even aware we are doing this. When we make the decision to let go of the old, room is made for the new and the door to new possibilities are open and waiting for us. Consider some practices to welcome renewal, growth, and revitalization to mark the beginning of a fresh new start or a new direction. Plant some seeds with the intention of positivity and abundance in your life. Create your own cleanse by not only physically cleaning and decluttering your home but tidying up and letting your intuition guide you to what you truly need to release, habits, thoughts, and things in your home, to make way for the new creative and fun energies. Get outside for a mindful walk in nature to take in the sun, sight, and sounds and let it lift and renew your body and soul. Set some intentions by choosing what metaphorical seeds you’re planting this season and how you’ll water them. Aligning your values and yourself with positive affirmations and intentions. All of these are a perfect time to tune into the wisdom of your true nature to refresh your mind, body, and spirit News Sunday, May 6th, is Pot Luck Sunday. Since we are in the town hall we think it is best to keep things simple. Sandwiches, veggies, fruit, cheese, dessert, or something along those lines would be good. June

Welcome to June Everyone! We have exciting news so let's get right to it! News HLSC is HAPPY to announce that for the first time, ever, in the history of our church we will be holding services the entire summer! And winter too of course. For 13 years our church suspended services in August and turned things over to Camp Etna. This initially happened because the Pastor and founder of HLSC, Donna Williams, facilitated every service back then and needed a break. The camp agreed to do the services in August so that Donna could have a vacation. The practice continued even after Donna retired and we created the Pastoral Council in 2014 only because, well, it had become a tradition in the church to suspend services in August. All that being said, after hearing from our members that they wanted our church to hold services throughout the entire year, including August, it was decided that yes, we would hold services year-round and not suspend them at all. So, thanks to our members speaking together with one voice our church will hold services all year long. Woo Hoo! Potluck Sunday is June 3rd. Come enjoy church service then stay after for a bite to eat and good conversation with like-minded folks. All are welcome! (Finger foods are best) Serving the church in June June 3rd & 10th: Rev. July

Greetings Everyone, and Happy Fourth of July! I have just returned from 10 days in California. I was out there visiting my daughter, and what is even more wonderful is my brother and sister joined me! I am fortunate in that I have a terrific relationship with my siblings and we enjoy traveling together. I feel very blessed in this regard. Up until this visit I have not been in California for about 15 years. As with all of my travels, I am always VERY happy to return to Maine. The sheer number of people in California is staggering, not to mention the traffic! While I was there I visited Big Sur. It is one of my favorite places. The coastline in Northern California is breathtaking, to say the least. The energy there is palpable. Such majesty of nature is not easily matched in my humble opinion. But then again, I'm not a world traveler so it is likely this very same, or at least similar, majestic energy does exist elsewhere. During low tide on Pfieffer Beach in Big Sur, you can see starfish in an array of colors clinging to rocks and sea anemones in tidal pools. The splendor of watching a sunset there is beyond words. For me, these are the things dreams are made of. I went kayaking in Avila Bay where I had the pleasure, and joy, of seeing sea otters with their babies, sea lions, harbor seals, and pelicans up close and personal. Not too close, though, as I feel it is disrespectful of nature and animals not to give them their space, also, it can be dangerous getting too close. My daughter and I found some plastic bags floating in the bay which we retrieved and disposed of when we returned to land. Plastic in any form can be, and usually is, deadly to sea life. I must say, though, that for all the people who live in California the amount of trash on the roads and in the water was minimal. Thank goodness! One thing I do where ever I go is offer up a blessing to the earth, the sea, the sky, and all beings who share this planet with us. The sea is in particular peril from all forms of pollution and overfishing. Knowing this I encourage everyone to buy products that are sustainably farmed or grown. For example, if you are currently taking fish oil you may want to switch to flaxseed oil. It gives you the same benefit and is sustainable. If you consume tuna look for labels that say sustainably harvested, line caught, and dolphin safe. And whenever possible buy organic, for your own good health and the health of the planet. If we can remember that we share this planet with all sorts of living, breathing beings and act accordingly we can make a difference. As I stated earlier, I am always happy to return to the peace and serenity of Maine. Our coastline is no less beautiful than California's, just different. Different but still magnificent and we have far fewer people and cars here, even during tourist season. Aren't we lucky?!!! Looking forward to seeing everyone at church this Sunday. I've missed you! News Potluck is Sunday, July 1st. Please come and bring a dish to share. Finger foods only, please! This next piece of news is a bit difficult to write but here goes, I will be stepping down as lead pastor of our church effective July 31st. I will, however, continue to lead some services until December 31st and of course, I will be in church. The church is an integral part of my spiritual life so although I will no longer be the lead pastor I will still be around. I took over the position of pastor in December of 2014 with the intention of doing it for 2 years. Well, it has been a bit more than 3-1/2 years and I feel I have fulfilled my commitment to the church and to myself. The winds of change are blowing and I must ride the wind to see where it takes me. Some accomplishments of my tenure are: creating a pastoral council, changing the format, somewhat, of how we conduct services as well as instituting the all healing and message service that is held the last Sunday of every month, introduced new, more contemporary songs, as well as revive some very old songs, created and maintained the church newsletter, created an online ordination course, ordained 3 of our 5 pastors, as well as others, and I have helped to grow our congregation. I have been at nearly every service in my more than 3-1/2 years as the lead pastor and every one of them has been a great joy for me. Something I have always looked forward to every Sunday. So, my friends and spiritual church family, I want to thank you for your support of the church and of me these past few years. I must say it has been a real pleasure and a blessing to serve and grow our church. Wishing you many blessings of spirit and I'll see you in church! August

Happy summer in August! As we enter the `Dog Days of Summer' let us think of fun ways to stay cool. The state of Maine offers State Parks with lakes as well as other lake areas, such as: Etna Lake, a nice place to swim with the loons and Peaks Kinney (a Park) in Dover Foxcroft. Many other choices are also available. It is easy to forget to drink plenty of fluids. Many Mainers have air conditioned homes and cars. We use them to go to air conditioned stores, restaurants, church, ect.,. With all this air conditioning it can be possible our body is slightly cool when we start a project outside. As we work our project, we can get hot FAST! So keep cool during these `Dog Days' and remember to drink plenty of water and `leave a good taste in your mouth' !! Happy August News Refreshments instead of potluck will be held the first Sunday of each month starting this August 5th. Please come and bring a light snack to share as well as conversation and connection. Reverend Shirley Boyens has stepped down as a pastor from Healing Light Spiritualist church. We would like to thank her for all that she has done and wish her the best on her next adventures. We would like to ask that if any members have blue hymnals to please bring them back to church so we can provide them to the congregation for services. Serving the church in August: Aug. 5th: Rev. September

Welcome to September! The month of September has a bit of bustle to it as the warm days of August cool down. Parents are getting things together for the kids to go back to school, projects that were too warm in August are starting and harvests of the seasons are being graciously gathered. As you look back, see the harvest times as not only the food gathered but the great and small accomplishments that you’ve obtained. Was it a new spiritual development technique, a new building project you took on, a new hiking trail, became friends with someone you didn’t know, or explored a whole new area. No matter what you did, how big or small, celebrate! Raise your arms up, tip your head back, smile big, and from you heart proclaim YOU DID IT!! Let it be felt far and wide. Enjoy the warm days and the wonderful things yet to come. Blessings! November

Greetings Healing Light Spiritualist Church Members, We are now in the “harvest’ part of the year and I’d like to touch on what this means. The "Harvest” can mean several things. Yes, it means the harvest of food, and here in Maine we have been well blessed with a long and productive summer, so there should be sufficient food to sustain us and our animal friends through the winter. And thank goodness we have wonderful grocery stores to provide for us through the winter as well. The harvest can also mean the harvest of souls and celebrating the lives of those who have passed into spirit. Halloween is the holiday that is celebrated for fun in the secular world and In addition to the word "Halloween" frequently you will hear terms like, "All Souls Day", "All Hallows Eve", and "All Saints Eve" and all these terms connect to October 31, November 1st and November 2nd. All Saints Eve began as a Catholic festival but then split off from All Saints Eve when the Irish and Scottish changed it into the secular Halloween. "All Souls Day", celebrated on November 2nd, is the source of Halloween’s connection to death. Spiritualists view death as another birthday. To us, a person's death really means birth or graduation from earth life to spirit life. This is a good time of year to celebrate our ancestors for without them we would not be here. News As of October 14th, we have an entirely new board of directors and already the ideas and opportunities are flowing in unimaginable ways! Your new board members are: Rev. Janet Decker, President, Janice Nelson Kroesser, Vice President, Diane Jackman Skofield, Secretary, Rev. Linda Holmes, Treasurer, and Bruce Towle, Trustee. Our first board meeting was held in the town hall on October 28, 2018, after church service. All church members were invited to attend. You will find the minutes from that meeting at the end of the newsletter. There are exciting things on the horizon for our little church. Things that, with proper planning, could propel us into a wonderful future. The church board of directors wants our members to be directly involved with the decision making process as we move forward into a very bright future. Because we value our member's input we hope you can attend church on Sunday, November 4th, and stay after for refreshments and to discuss the following: We have an amazing opportunity to purchase a property for a permanent home for our beloved Healing Light Spiritualist Church. We invite all our members to meet with the board and discuss this possibility following church service next Sunday, November 4, 2018. Here is some information for you to ponder in the meantime: 1- The Property is conveniently located in Etna. 2- The Property generates income which would pay the mortgage. 3- We have been offered financing to purchase this property. More News! We have 2 new members to our church, Ava Spruce and Karen Costigan. Karen and Ava, we bid you WELCOME to our church family! We are happy you chose to join our church and we look forward to any input you can give that will help grow our church. One thing I have always advocated is that each member of our church is important to us and to each other. You are part of our family and church community. Our goal to each member is, at least in part, to make sure our members know they do not walk alone through this life. You now have like-minded family member's that will lend an ear or a helping hand. We, your church family, are here to help each other. If you have need of spiritual counseling the pastors are here to help. Feel free to reach out to any one of us. If you have other needs please bring them to a board member and we will discuss possibilities for giving you assistance. December

HLSC Newsletter December 2018 Special Services all month! Member comment: "Thank you for allowing me to be part of the church. It is a blessing!" Greetings Healing Light Spiritualist Church Members and Friends, The most hectic, and to me the most sacred time of the year, is upon us. I have long since lost all interest in the hustle and bustle part of the Christmas season, and many years ago I said, "Enough!" Since then I have been able to enjoy the sacredness of the season. Probably one of the wisest decisions I have ever made in my life. This shift in consciousness regarding the Christmas season happened pretty naturally and easily for me. I cannot really say how the shift happened but I can say why. As I watched people stressing and wearing themselves out to make everything perfect for their Christmas holidays I thought, "How crazy can people be?" Then I realized I no longer wanted to be a part of that craziness and said, "No more!". The shift had happened with hardly the blink of an eye. It seems that this holiday craziness has ruined the true meaning of Christmas and I feel very sad about that. But until people slow down and look for the beauty that is inherent in this season of giving I doubt they will ever truly enjoy the holiday. My prayer for you is that you can slow down enough to be in a space of peace, love, and joy as the light returns to earth on December 21st, the winter solstice. Allow, to the best of your ability, the stillness and quietness of that light fill your soul with joy so that you may experience the true meaning of Christmas. Peace and blessings to all! News With its many observances, the month of December services will bring a special theme of “Peace on Earth.” Indeed, we are now ushering in a new millennium of peace. In our services this month, we will focus on and celebrate peace in several of its aspects. Dec. 2 - “Peace in Freedom” with Hanukkah Dec. 9 - “Peace in Diversity” with Diversity Dec. 16 - “Peace in Darkness” with Winter Solstice Dec. 23 - “Peace in Love” with Christmas (evening service at 6:30 pm Etna Townhall. No morning service) Dec. 30 - “Peace Within” with Kwanza The Dec. 23rd Christmas service will be a deviation from our regular format as a very special candlelight service will be held at 6:30 pm and will include a metaphysical interpretation of the Christmas story, singing of Christmas carols, and lighting of candles. Plan to bring your family and friends to this joyous, deeply inspiring, beautiful Christmas service. Please bring your favorite Christmas cookies or holiday hors-d'oeuvres and plan to stay after for smiles and conversation! Sunday, December 2nd is refreshment Sunday. In keeping with the theme for that Sunday's service, "Peace in Freedom" with Hanukkah, bringing Hanukkah goodies would be great. Here are some suggestions: Jelly donuts, Hanukkah cookies, cheese, bagels, and cream cheese, macaroons, potato latkes. Church membership dues are due in January. If you joined the church after September 1st, 2018 you will not need to pay dues until January of 2020. Watch your mail for the renewal form. To update you on the purchase of our church building let me just say it is still a work in progress. There are some things that have to fall into place before we can go to closing, but we are confident that things will indeed fall into place. More News!
