Greetings HLSC Members and Friends, So here we are in 2021. It's a new year and time for those New Year resolutions. Let's take a look at how we manifest things in our lives. Everything in our life begins with a thought. Combine that thought with a feeling and it is dynamite! Remember, dynamite, like a sword, can have a dual effect. It can clear a path and bring you your heart's desire or it can blow things apart. This is the awesome power we all have but most of us do not wield it well. The reason most people do not wield this power well is that they don't have a clue they possess it. I trust that everyone reading this newsletter does know and therefore it behooves us to pay attention to our thoughts and feelings. The Wiccan Rede says, "What ye send out comes back to thee." And indeed it does. It is best, I think, not to start each day thinking about what you want to have happen that day. It is much better to start every day by recalling a time or event wherein you felt happy. Focus on that feeling of happiness and how sweet it is. Say/think to yourself, "I am going to feel this all day long." And repeat that several times. By simply focusing on how you want to feel every day instead of what you want to have happen for you, you are allowing the universe to handle the details. You do not need to be specific, the universe will bring you things, people, synchronistic opportunities, etc. which will support you in continuing to feel good and happy. You can certainly put an intention out into the universe just remember to simply feel happy in that intention. For example, you may intend to get a new car but lack the funds. As you put thoughts of that new car "out there" think about how good it will feel to have it. You can picture that new car, go to the car lot and look at it, think about how it will feel to sit in it and drive it but that is all you really have to do. In fact, it is definitely better if you do nothing more. When we get our mind involved in the where, when, why, and how of things we can really muck it up. Best to let the universe handle those details. You just focus on how good it will feel to have whatever it is you are asking for. Spend time in that feeling of happiness every day if only for a few minutes several times a day. If you do I know you will see miracles happen. Oh, one more thing, it is best not to put a clock on the result. If you do you could experience disappointment. Wait and trust the universe to bring it to you when the time is right. Michael Van Ginkel is an ordained Spiritualist Minister and the lead pastor for The Healing Light Spiritualist Church. He is a Reiki practitioner and is currently working on his "master teacher" certification. Michael is also a Shamanic Practitioner. He spends many hours reading spiritual and religious texts in order to get a better understanding of our oneness with the Creator and to help him fulfill his purpose as a lightworker and healer. Michael actively participates in spiritual workshops and study groups in order to pass on the knowledge that Spirit has brought forth for him. Michael works with the Angels and finds that it is usually Uriel and Metatron who come to him because of his thirst for knowledge. Michael lives in Winthrop. Robert Thompson grew up in the East Corinth area. Robert has felt a connection to spirit from a very young age. Since attending The Healing Light Spiritualist Church he has focused on developing his mediumship abilities. Robert has worked in multiple fields such as the justice system and addiction treatment. Currently, he performs outreach and community integration with the homeless population in the Bangor area. Robert is a trustee on the HLSC Board of Directors. Rev. Ava Spruce is an ordained Spiritualist Minister and a pastor with HLSC and is a Reiki practitioner in the Usui System of Healing. Ava is a creative and loving soul who has been seeing, hearing and feeling spirit from a very young age. She began Mediumship Development classes at age 15 with her father and has been taking these classes now for over 30 years. Ava enjoys serving area churches as a speaker and medium and her focus is on sharing love and light. Rev. Dr. Janet Decker is an ordained minister in the Spiritualist Church, the Metaphysical Church, and she holds a doctorate in Metaphysical Studies. She is a certified clinical, forensic, and spiritual hypnotherapist and a certified psychic medium and spiritual counselor. She is Dean of Metaphysical Studies for the International Metaphysical University where she also teaches psychic development and paranormal studies. Janet is a pastor of the Healing Light Spiritualist Church in Etna, Maine, and creator and teacher of the Independent Spiritualist Minister Ordination program. Andrew “Andy” Robinson was born in Bangor, Maine on November 4th, 1997. By the age of 7, he began seeing shadow people and hearing whispers that weren’t audible to those around him. By age 16, he became youth group leader at Bradford Baptist Church and Hermon Baptist Church; His heart set on someday being a pastor of his own church. By the age of 18 he found himself struggling with his faith. He found it hard to accept the concepts and philosophies that he had found amongst the books he poured over. His new goal was to scour all religions in search of the Universal Truth. At the age of 21, his abilities began to grow and manifest in the form of prophetic dreams, visions of symbols, and more appearances of shadow people. Now, he continues to hone his gifts through personal study and classes with guidance from his beloved friend and mentor, Ava Spruce. January Classes - Workshops - Events Silent Auction. Greetings HLSC Members and Friends, As we are in the month of February and as we are celebrating Valentine's day I think it is good to reflect on "love". This is a Bible verse that I have always thought is particularly beautiful. It is from 1 Corinthians 13. "Love is patient. Love is kind. Love is not envious, or boastful, or arrogant, or rude. It does not insist on its own way. It is not irritable or resentful. It does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will come to an end. As for tongues, they will cease. As for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part, but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I fought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now, we see in a mirror dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part, then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. Secretary Position: Recently we have become aware that due to personal reasons our Board Secretary, Diane Skolfield, has decided to step down from her duties with the board as her path moves forward. She is not leaving our community she simply feels the time has come for this change. I want to thank Diane from the bottom of my heart for all the wonderful things she has done and continues to do for our church and community and I wish her happiness on her journey forward. Diane has offered to help anyone who may wish to assume the position so that the transfer will be smooth for all. With that in mind, the board has decided to reach out to all members inquiring for anyone who may be interested in taking over this position. Anyone who is interested should contact one of the board members to have their names considered for the position. You can find a list of duties for the position in the by-law section of our website and we look forward to hearing from you. After 30 days the board will review our position and move forward. Greetings HLSC Members and Friends, As we enter into the month of March we begin to notice that the days are getting longer and we can start to feel the icy grip of winter slowly starting to release her grasp. The warmth of the sun's rays becoming ever warmer and stronger, inviting Mother Earth to awaken anew. As we start to see and feel the subtle signs of spring starting to appear, for many it brings forth a new feeling of joy and excitement as we look forward to the activities of spring. For some of us, we begin to plan for the new gardens and we start the new sprouts, for others they may begin to prepare for the beginning of the new maple season when the tree's sap of life once again starts flowing after months of lying dormant and resting. So too for many of us, we have huddled down in our cozy homes for the last few months, resting and replenishing ourselves, as we wait for the signs of spring to begin to emerge so we can once again step out into the green and colorful warmth of Mother Earth. With the beginning of Spring this month and as the days start to grow longer we see and know that the coldest days of winter are behind us and it won't be long until we once again hear the sounds of the ducks and peepers coming back to the bogs and streams. Spring is a time of new beginnings and as we open our hearts to Spirit we embrace wholeheartedly the fresh new path that Spirit lays out before us. It is a time to finish our winter projects and begin to plan for the season before us, for with Spring comes new life and opportunities as it is a time of re-birth, full of joy and excitement. Over these next few weeks, I encourage you to take a few moments every day and just stop to look around you and watch the beauty of Mother Earth as she awakens before your very eyes. There will be no Mediumship Development group on Sunday, March 21st Secretary Position: Recently we have become aware that due to personal reasons our Board Secretary, Diane Skolfield, has decided to step down from her duties with the board as her path moves forward. She is not leaving our community she simply feels the time has come for this change. I want to thank Diane from the bottom of my heart for all the wonderful things she has done and continues to do for our church and community and I wish her happiness on her journey forward. Diane has offered to help anyone who may wish to assume the position so that the transfer will be smooth for all. With that in mind, the board has decided to reach out to all members inquiring for anyone who may be interested in taking over this position. Anyone who is interested should contact one of the board members to have their names considered for the position. You can find a list of duties for the position in the by-law section of our website and we look forward to hearing from you. After 30 days the board will review our position and move forward. His new goal was to scour all religions in search of the Universal Truth. Greetings HLSC Members and Friends, Happy Spring!! We have made it into the new season. As we begin this month with Easter Sunday and the lessons it teaches us about our eternal oneness with the Creator, we can look around us and see the many signs that mother nature shows us as she begins anew. We are reminded that as we cycle through our sojourns, as with all things, there are new beginnings and re-births throughout our lives. We are constantly reborn every day with a new and fresh opportunity to create the most positive and joyous experience that can be manifested and the only thing stopping us is our own thoughts. Springtime means opening the windows and airing out the house. It's time to clean the closest and get rid of the stale old stuff we have accumulated through the winter. The same thing goes for our heads. If we leave the negative thoughts and the cobwebs of dreariness in our minds then it's kind of hard to manifest positive and uplifting realities. Spring is our season which reminds us that we do occasionally need to clean and renew our minds and lives. "April showers bring May flowers". Lovely is the smell of the fresh rain on the newly turned garden as we get ready to sow the seeds that we hope will lead to a bountiful harvest in the fall. The sounds of spring start filling the air as the songbirds, ducks, and peepers have returned to the bogs and streams. and soon we will be able to watch the mothers with their young as they traverse the ponds and brooks. Truly Spring is a magical time of year as we watch the buds and blooms beginning to open. Greetings HLSC Members and Friends, With the trees budding and the grass and flowers starting to turn all different shades of green and colors, everywhere we look we are reminded of the new life springing forth before us. The smell after an early morning shower or heavy dew reminds us that a fresh new season is upon us. It is a time for fresh ideas and projects as the days are rapidly becoming longer. For us in New England, May is the month of opening up. We open our camps and cottages, we see the seasonal stores starting to open and getting ready for the summer season. So too is this the perfect season to open ourselves up to Spirit and the wonders that having that Divine connection will bring. The morning weather is becoming perfect to sit outside and meditate with the sunrise while the birds and outdoor life wakes anew. The evenings also are becoming perfect for enjoying sitting outside and watching the sunset or doing an evening meditation. Spring is truly a magical time of year. It is my hope that each of you can take a few minutes out of your day when you can just stop and enjoy the wonders that are unfolding before your very eyes. A walk in the woods, a stroll on a beach at the ocean or just sitting under a tree, it really doesn't matter as long as you just take time to connect with mother earth and listen to what nature is saying. So get out and do what you enjoy doing it doesn't matter if it's hiking, biking camping, fishing, or just reading a book on a bench in the shade, just take a few moments to connect with nature and enjoy what Spirit is showing you. Fresh air doesn't hurt anyone (except the fish) and remember that no matter what activity you are enjoying, "Keep it sunny side up" Peace be with you all, Rev. Robert has felt a connection to spirit from a very young age. Since attending The Healing Light Spiritualist Church he has focused on developing his mediumship abilities. Robert has worked in multiple fields such as the justice system and addiction treatment. Currently, he performs outreach and community integration with the homeless population in the Bangor area. Robert is a trustee on the HLSC Board of Directors. Andrew “Andy” Robinson was born in Bangor, Maine on November 4th, 1997. By the age of 7, he began seeing shadow people and hearing whispers that weren’t audible to those around him. By age 16, he became youth group leader at Bradford Baptist Church and Hermon Baptist Church; His heart set on someday being a pastor of his own church. By the age of 18, he found himself struggling with his faith. He found it hard to accept the concepts and philosophies that he had found amongst the books he poured over. His new goal was to scour all religions in search of the Universal Truth. At the age of 21, his abilities began to grow and manifest in the form of prophetic dreams, visions of symbols, and more appearances of shadow people. Greetings HLSC Members and Friends, As we come into the month of June, we find that the "Season of the Jacket" is long behind us and it's time for sunshine, beaches, and hiking trails. By now we have gotten a good start on our Spring projects, the yards have been manicured, the gardens planted and our home aired out from the long months of being closed up. With the smell of lilacs and various flowers filling the air it is truly the time to start becoming one with nature and all of the beauty that the Creator brings forth for us. An evening sitting outside and listening to Mother Nature play her symphony of sounds will bring your meditation to new levels of peace and tranquility. You will find no better song than the one that Mother Nature sings for us. With the Summer Solstice approaching us this month we find the days have gotten longer and it's a perfect time for getting together with family & friends, having BBQs, and sitting around the campfires. Singing and creating memories together will span a lifetime. So get out and enjoy the beauty of the ending days of Spring and the beginning days of Summer and all of the wonders that it holds for us. June is the month of the family as it is the vibration of the 6th month and a time for weddings, graduations, and celebrations. My wish for you all is for you to be able to get out and enjoy what this wonderful month has in store for you and create memories that will last forever. Hello Healing Light Members and a Happy Summer to you! As I write this, I reflect on the temperatures soaring into the 90s and then plummeting into the 40s, and realize how this roller coaster weather the world is experiencing is rather like the highs and the lows of our lives. Some complain about the heat and others go swimming. Some complain about the cold and others bundle up and go for a vigorous walk. I try to be one of the “others” who rarely complains and almost always enjoys the present moment, no matter what is happening around me. I always trust The Universe and know that everything is in Perfect Order. Last week, due to personal reasons, Michael Van Ginkel, Ava Spruce and Robert Thompson resigned from the HLSC Board. We thank Michael, Ava and Robert for serving the church to the best of their ability and wish them well on their respective journeys. We are thrilled to announce that long time Healing Light Spiritualist Church member, Bruce Towle, has stepped in as our President. He will bring stability and compassion to this post. We are also thrilled to announce that our bright and shining star, Sarah Lane has stepped in as our Treasurer. She brings years of experience from her previous home on Swans Island where she served on the Island’s municipal advisory committee, electric Co-Op board and the comprehensive planning committee along with creating and maintaining their Island Information Page. We look forward to the positive changes in our new Healing Light Spiritualist Church Board. As the saying goes it isn’t what happens to us it is how we react to it that is the key to finding joy. Hello and a Happy August to you! Okay, I really wanna know. Who turned off the heat? Or maybe I should ask, where are the Dog Days of Summer? I do not believe those couple of days back in June when everyone was sweltering can count as our Maine summer, or, can they? I understand that 50 degree nights and 60 and 70 degree days are delightful for many reading this newsletter. Personally, I prefer 60 degree nights and 80 and 90 degree days. That is why I spend my fall, winter and spring in Florida. I long for those lazy, hazy days of summer of 2020 when we spent nearly every afternoon leisurely floating in Little Etna Pond. But wait a minute Diane, aren't you the one who is always quoting some smart guru by saying, "No expectations, no disappointments?" Aren't you the one who is always saying make the best of what you have? Of course I am! Despite the weather, of which I could be complaining about, I am happy to say I have been taking advantage of this delightful working-weather to paint my new cottage. Well, at least the front of my new cottage. First impressions are important, so are 2nd and 3rd impressions:) Speaking of impressions, in the past couple of months we have created some important guidelines to keep the impressions we put forth that which we can be proud. We now have guidelines for Music and Songs sung in our church as well as guidelines for Mediums and Healers. We even created some Rules and Regulations for people visiting our Healing Light Spiritual Center. They can be found on our Healing Light Spiritualist Church website on the ABOUT US drop down menu under Guidelines. Oh, a couple of other exciting news items. First, we would like to welcome Alex Gilgan to our board as our Trustee. If there is something you would like to talk to her about her contact info is at the end of this newsletter. And, drum roll please. We are pleased to announce our new Healing Light Spiritualist Church Scholarship Fund! These scholarships are for any spiritually uplifting classes and we have an application which can be filled out by any Healing Light Spiritualist Church Member or any Camp Etna Member. We decided to include members of Camp Etna in an effort to inform people that we are two separate organizations but we work together to promote Spiritualism. If you are a member of one of these two organizations and there is a class you would like to attend please email HealingLightEtna@gmail.com to request an application. Back to my desire for warmer weather, well, I am happy I got up this morning to some lovely rainy weather. As Summer Slips Away... As summer slips away autumn is sneaking up right behind it. September 22, 2021 at 3:21pm is the moment of the Fall Equinox, or Mabon, the astrological beginning of the autumn season in the Northern Hemisphere, and the beginning of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. The importance of this moment is signified by its name, the Equinox. The daylight hours and the sunlight hours are equal and balanced. It is celebrated in our Northern Hemisphere as the end of the growing season and Rituals of Thanks are performed honoring those responsible for growing. If we did not have growers we would not have food. Most people in today's society do not recognize the importance of those who grow. We go to the grocery store and nearly everything we need or want is spread out before our eyes. Please, try to take a few moments and give thanks to those who provide the bounty with which we are blessed. Happy Fall Y'all We had our Annual Members' Meeting on September 19th. All in attendance enjoyed the deli trays from Hannaford's and the camaraderie! Elections were held and our board now consists of President-Rev. Janet Decker, Vice President-Janice Nelson Kroesser, Secretary-Michele Caitlyn-Strout, Treasurer-Sarah Lane, and Trustee-Alex Gilgan. Thank you ladies for serving our church! Their contact info is at the end of the newsletter. How about a little history lesson about our church? Back in October 2004, our Founding Pastor, Donna Williams, and her life-partner, Barbara Dolliver, along with several local people, formed the non-profit Healing Light Spiritualist Church of Etna. They met every Sunday year-round at the Etna Town Hall. Beginning in 2010 they shared the two summer months with Camp Etna so the visiting mediums would speak and give messages at both the Etna Town Hall services and the Rev. Gladys LaLiberte Temple on Camp Etna's grounds and each organization would receive one of the month's offerings. Donna retired in 2014 and Rev. Janet Decker stepped up to lead the church. In July of 2015, we signed a lease with Camp Etna and began holding services year-round at the Rev. Gladys LaLiberte Temple. In 2017 we found the lease was not going to be renewed in 2018 and we went back to the Etna Town Hall while looking for a new permanent home. We were so pleased to find our current location at 38 Stage Road and we opened here in July 2019. Why the history lesson now? Well, I believe this is the last newsletter this Historian will be composing and I wanted to get this important information out to everyone. Also, it is with a heavy heart I tell those of you who knew Barbara Ann Gould Dolliver that she passed away on August 28, 2021, after a long battle with cancer. I spoke to Donna, her life partner, this week and she is moving to Gorham to live with her daughter. Donna and Barbara spent the last five years, very happy, in the Belgrade Lakes area. If you want to send Donna a card she is at 6 Day Road, Gorham, Maine 04038. Another person related to this history lesson is the granddaughter of Rev. Gladys LaLiberte, Karlene Tanner. Karlene passed peacefully on September 26, 2021. Let us pray for both of these newly transitioned souls. And while we are at it, let us pray for all those people left behind who must find new ways to live their lives when a loved one passes. Being a Spiritualist means we believe their souls continue to live and learn and communicate on The Other Side but we still miss their presence on this Earth Plane. Blessed Be. Happy November! Hi! I'm Michele. I live in Hampden with my three red-headed Pomeranians, Tom Tom the Pom Pom, Lucy and Charlie. I am going to retire next year from the United States Postal Service with almost 36 years under my belt. I love any body of water that I can swim in or kayak over. My religion has always been outdoors with Mother Earth, but I am always searching for new experiences and new people to love and to love me. So, earlier this year, I started searching for a new church. One Sunday, a few months ago, I got in the car and ended up at the Healing Light Spiritualist Church. I knew fairly quickly I had found a spiritual home. Strangers soon became friends and I decided to stick around. Last month I was honored to be voted in as our church secretary. As I sit here in the quiet of the office writing this before the church service begins, I'm gazing out the window as the leaves are falling to the ground. I'm reminded how nature does everything in it's own time and she doesn't worry about anything. We worry about the lines on our faces and the hair thinning on our heads. Aging is not for woosies...I can tell ya' that. I ask Mother Earth for a way to accept the changes that is happening to me in every aspect of my life. I watch the leaves budding in the spring, greening up for the summer, changing colors in the fall and now...without any major discussion or uncertainty about the future...the leaves are gracefully falling to the ground...accepting their fate. The trees are getting bare, but they accept that time goes on, and as the darkness descends upon us, nature is reminding us to rest and accept changes that are happening around us and to us. The back row of chairs is designated as healing chairs for those folks who have difficulty getting up and down or walking up front to sit in a healing chair. Holiday Greetings Everyone! I really love this time of year. I'm probably going to get booed and hissed off the newsletter, but I'm one of those crazy souls who loves the snow. My three Pomeranians roll around in the fluffy white stuff, looking up at me with their little faces covered in snow and smiling ear to ear. But my love of the season goes much deeper than a snowbank...get it? A little play-on-words there. But seriously, you know that feeling you get when the holidays are getting close and you can feel the shift in attitude? People seem to be happier...more giving and caring to their fellow humans. Someone sees you waiting to pull out into traffic, and they wave you in. You wave back. The homeless lady on Main Street in Bangor struggles to push her shopping cart through the snow, and you feel compelled to stop at Dunkin' Donuts drive thru and get her a hot chocolate and a box of donut holes. And the unmistakable tone of those Salvation Army bells! You just can't walk by the shivering cold Santa waving that bell. So, you stand in the cold with him, digging around your purse or your pockets for some money to put in the little, red bucket. I could go on, but I know you know what I mean. Well, our little Healing Light church has got the holiday "Spirit", too! There is this sweetheart named Kelsey who comes to our church, and she presented an idea to us Board members a couple weeks ago. A "Giving Tree"! I'm sure you've heard of an "Angel Tree"? It's kinda' like that, but instead of picking tags off the tree to purchase toys for kids, the tree is filled with requests for help. It can be anything. Do you need help paying your phone bill? Do you need someone to talk to? Just ask. You may need help buying food for Christmas dinner for your family or a big ol' doggie bone for your trusty companion. The point is that we spend our time and money where it is the most important...caring for one another. And every request is private and anonymous. Kelsey will be handing out request forms and an envelope (to keep things private). If you don't see her, there will be extra forms and envelopes on the counter, just as you come in the church. There will be a drop box to put these envelopes in. Then she will put tags on the trees and if you feel so moved, you can pick one, write your name and contact info on the tag and put it in the same drop box. Kelsey says she will arrange things with each donor, and share contact information only when necessary to connect the donor and recipient. Isn't that just the nicest idea?! So, get your forms in by December 12th. They request tags will remain on the tree until January 2nd. I am so happy I found this caring church community. What a wonderful bunch of people we have here! WHAT’S HAPPENING Third Thursday Healing Circle, December 15th, from 6-8pm: Join us for our monthly Healing Circle the third Thursday of each month. We are all One with Source and we all have the potential to be Healers. Sit in circle with others to raise the vibration and bring Source's LOVE through for healing yourself and others. Doors close at 6:15 pm sharp. No one will be admitted after that. All levels of experience are welcome. $20. Gallery Readings: Rev. Alex will have Mediums lined up for these events to take place on the first Friday of the month from 6-8 p.m. The next one will be December 3rd. Mediumship Development Group Sunday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Facilitated by Rev. Alex Gilgan, at the Healing Light Spiritual Center, 38 Stage Rd in Etna. Everyone is welcome, beginners through advanced. The group begins with a meditation and allows attendees to experience a variety of methods to open the lines of communication with The Other Side. There is no group meeting on the 3rd Sunday of this month, because Rev. Alex is taking a well deserved break, but we'll be back the next Sunday afternoon. Cost is by donation, so feel free to join us, even if your pockets may be a little empty one Sunday afternoon, we'd love to have you join us. Children's Get-Together: Arts & Crafts, Music & Movement and Snack-Making December 29th from 12 to 3pm. Join us for an afternoon of fun and a chance for the kiddos in our community to spend some time together during school vacation. Open to all ages! We'll be doing some arts and crafts, playing with musical instruments and learning to express ourselves by moving our bodies, and making some snacks! Donations are welcome, but not required; a $5/per child donation would help us continue to host events like this but please don't feel like you cannot come if you cannot donate! We want everyone to come and enjoy the fun! We are also looking for some adults to volunteer as chaperones -- just helping watch over the kids during activities. If there are any food allergies/dietary restrictions, please let us know, so we can plan our snacks accordingly. Children welcome with adult attendee. We have vehicle, boat, motorcycle, sled, and ATV storage space available for rent. Rent is $35.00 a month for car/truck/small boat rental, and $20.00 a month for motorcycles, sleds, and ATV's. Large boats taking up more than one space is $35.00 per space. We offer seasonal and year-round rental. Please call, or text, 207-269-2142 to make arrangements. All rentals are on a first-come-first-served basis. A Ride Tree For folks who want to come to church, but are finding the high cost of gasoline a deterrent from getting here. The Ride Tree program is based on what towns folks live in.
