Happy New Year, Everyone!
Here we are at the beginning of a brand new year. Numerologically 2017 is a "One" (1) year. Exactly what does that mean, you may ask?
A "One" year is a beginning year. If you want to start a new project, a new job, a new relationship, a new life for that matter, this is the year to do it, energetically speaking that is. Reason being, the energy streaming in from the universe is extremely supportive of new ventures in a "One" year, and actually, next year as well. However, this year, because it is a "One" year, you can expect to receive the greatest assistance possible.
Also, energetically speaking, every year at the winter solstice is a great time to decide for yourself what truly matters to you and the direction your life should go in now. Neale Donald Walsh suggests the best way to start this introspection is to ask yourself 4 questions:
1) Who am I? 2) Where am I? 3) Why am I where I am? 4) What do I intend to do about that?
He also suggests that it can be helpful to ask yourself these questions as events unfold throughout your day. When you ask them daily they are informative as well as transformative.
Neale goes on to say that a true student of life will not answer these questions with a curt "I don't know" and let it go at that. Rather, if you truly don't have an answer, then "create one" with pure intention. In doing this you begin to live your life from intention as opposed to living your life by default.
We are constantly creating and recreating ourselves and the universe supports us in doing this. Not just in a "One" year, not just at the winter solstice, but through every moment of every day of our lives. When a Sufi teacher was asked "What is God doing all day?" the teacher replied, "God is lying on a birthing bed all day giving birth to creation." This is extremely good news for us as we make our journey through life. It is the promise of ever renewing creation to which we are all entitled. So, as you think of starting anew in 2017 don't think small, think BIG!
I thought it might be a good idea to remind folks of some "Spiritualism Etiquette". Some may not know what good "Spiritualism Etiquette" is and others may need to be reminded. Either way I feel it is good to write about it here.
When the inspirational talk and/or messages are being given it is best not to interrupt the speaker/medium for any reason. And, it is truly not a good idea to make an attempt, at that time, to explain things to them, or to otherwise try to hold a conversation with them. I'll explain why.
Part of doing this work requires the speaker/medium to shift upwards a level or two in consciousness. When the presenter is in the middle of talking, any noise in the room, including voices, is a huge distraction from the energetic flow the person is in. When the energetic flow is interrupted so is the flow of information coming through from spirit. Once the flow is interrupted it can be difficult, or even impossible, to get back into it. Also, and just as importantly, it is very startling, disconcerting, and usually, extremely unpleasant to the speaker/medium.
If the presenter asks you a question then it is safe, and correct to speak, otherwise, please hold questions or comments until a more appropriate time.
Another piece of etiquette is never touch a medium who giving messages or someone who is in trance. Again, it is startling and disturbing to the presenter. It is unlikely that touching a medium would ever occur in a public setting like a church service, however, if you are having a private reading it may seem okay to touch the readers hand or arm, but it is not. The sudden shift in vibration is very disconcerting, and in some cases dangerous to the reader. Reason being, the sudden change in vibration can cause a "jolt" to the readers nervous system. Similar to sticking a finger into a light socket.
Although what I am about to mention does not really fall under the heading of "etiquette" it will help folks to better understand what happens after a message has been given.
Most of the time the medium has little or no recollection of what they have just said, this is normal. When giving messages the medium must, as I said before, jump a level or two in consciousness. Or in other terms, they enter an altered state of consciousness, and when they return to normal consciousness what they talked about while in an "altered state" is often forgotten. So, when you ask a medium about a message they gave you and they say they don't remember please don't let your feelings be hurt. It is not that you are not important to them; rather, the information is simply gone from their mind.
As other things come to mind regarding "Spiritualism Etiquette" I will write about them in future issues of the newsletter. Also, please feel free to ask questions. Most mediums are happy to explain what happens to them when giving a message from spirit.
Pot Luck Sunday is January 1st, 2017.
Cathy Baker is now in Ross Manor where she is working daily to regain her strength and balance. She expects to be at Ross Manor for 4 to 6 weeks. If you have the opportunity to visit her, or can send her a card, I know she would be thrilled. Thinking healing thoughts is also most welcome.
Due to Pastor Laurie Xanthos being ill she was not able to teach the second half of Energy Healing class in December. We are putting our heads together to come up with a new date. Please stay tuned.
The Sunday afternoon mediumship development group will begin again on January 8th. We meet in the Temple at 1:30. Beginners, intermediate, and advanced students are welcome.
The Tuesday night mediumship development group is suspended for the time being. We will let you know when it will begin again.
We have a new sound system for our church and with the help of technology we now have recorded piano music to sing to. We tried it out on Christmas Day during our Solstice ceremony and I believe it will work nicely. It may take a few weeks to work out all the bugs so please bear with us.
Please be aware that the church membership yearly dues of $20.00 was due in October of 2016. If you forgot to pay them please send a check to: The Healing Light Church, PO box 137, Etna, ME 04434. Or, you can give them to Janet McNerney on any Sunday. Thank you.
In the spirit of giving our church provided a full Christmas dinner to a family of 6 in the community who would otherwise have gone without. It filled us with joy to be able to do this. In the years ahead we hope to expand our giving to more than one family.
Your membership dues along with Sunday offerings allow us to be of help to those who are in need. The Pastoral Council and the Church Board are grateful to our members and to all who attend our church and give so freely and lovingly of their resources. We pray that each of you will be well blessed with all things wonderful every day of your life!
Our church has a benevolence fund that we can use to help church members who have fallen on hard times. If you find yourself in need of some financial assistance this winter, be it to buy fuel or put food on the table, for example, please let one of the pastors know. Rest assured that all things discussed with the pastors or members of the church board will be held in strictest confidence.
The last Sunday of every month, beginning in January, will be an "All Healing and Message Service". What that means is, we will not have an inspirational talk on the last Sunday of the month but instead we will dedicate the entire service to healing and messages from spirit. This will be done in a circle formation. We hope you will enjoy this bit of a change up one Sunday a month. If not, we can always return to the standard format for all services.
While HLSC strives to bring you speakers and mediums that are inspiring and incredible in their ability to connect with spirit, we also want to encourage and teach others how to do the same. We are a "teaching church".
Students are the future of Spiritualism and they need to have a platform on which to "hone their skills", while at the same time, learning about appropriate presentation. That being said, from time to time, as in the past, we will have students facilitating the service, leading the meditations, giving the inspirational talks, and giving messages from spirit. Some students will be from our church and some may come to us from other churches. Where ever they come from we want to encourage their evolution and growth as spiritualists.
The Pastoral Council and the Church Board wish to thank you for helping us to grow our religion by coming out to support and encourage the students.

The back row of chairs on the right side of the church, as you enter, are designated as healing chairs for those folks who have difficulty getting up and down or walking up front to sit in a healing chair. There will be a healer assigned to those chairs at every service.
The church has an online Ordination Program. You can check it out here or you can find it under the "Classes" tab. The church membership application is available in the church and can also be downloaded from the home page of our web site.
There has been some confusion about HLSC and Camp Etna memberships. I hope the following will explain.
Becoming a member of HLSC does not automatically make you a member of Camp Etna. Camp Etna and the church are separate entities and each has their own set of requirements for becoming a member.
If you want to become a member of the church please go to our web site: healinglightspiritualistchurch.org to read our by-laws and membership requirements and if you want to become a member of Camp Etna please go to campetna.com to read their by-laws and membership requirements. If you do not use a computer, you may ask any member of the church board or camp board for their respective information.
You can send prayer requests and/or "suggestions" from our web site. You will find the form on the “Contact Us” page.
If you would like to serve as a speaker and/or a medium during one of our services, September through June, please see one of the pastors. Thank you.
Weather (Cancellation) Notification
When the weather is bad church services and meetings are canceled. You can check on the local TV news stations for our cancellations. We will also put the notice out on Facebook and via email. Once in a while we cancel church and then the storm doesn't manifest. Ahhhhh, nature, you cannot always predict her. Never the less, once church has been canceled we do not change it. Please make a note of this.
Please be ever mindful of safety both in the home and in your comings and goings this winter. Always think, Safety First!
To Say Thank You!
At this time I want to give honor to the pastors of our church for the selfless giving of their time and efforts. Your complete dedication to our church and to our members does not go unnoticed, believe me. As lead pastor I can honestly say, I do not know what I would do without you. You are a blessing to me and to everyone who attends our church. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
I also want to extend heartfelt gratitude to the members of the church board. I am aware of how busy everyone is these days and that you are willing to serve the church in the capacity as a board member is a blessing. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
A BIG THANK YOU to our speakers and mediums for the month of December.
A BIG THANK YOU to Sherwood for cleaning the Temple. Splendid job, Sherwood!
A BIG THANK YOU to pastor Dee Powers for providing the silk poinsettias and wreaths for our church.
A BIG THANK YOU to Karlene Tanner for monitoring the heat in the church and for clearing the deck of ice and snow. You are a God Send!
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the Food Drives.
A BIG THANK YOU to those who contributed to the Mid Maine Homeless Shelter, the local fire and rescue and the Native American Indian Reservations in Maine and Canada.
TO BE CLEAR, everyone who serves our church, no matter what the capacity, is a blessing to us. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
The first Sunday of every month is Pot Luck Sunday. Pot Luck is held at the Inn June through October (no pot luck in August) and in the Temple November through May. Come enjoy the service and stay after for a nice meal and conversation with like-minded souls.
A Mediumship Development Group meets every Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM in in the Temple (led by Rev. Janet Decker). Anyone who is interested in developing or growing their mediumship and psychic skills are welcome to join us. Beginners are certainly welcome as are the more advanced folks. Donations are gladly accepted.
The Mid Maine homeless shelter is asking for the following items. If you have items you would like to donate just bring them to the church on any Sunday and Pastor Dee Powers will collect and deliver them.
Here is a list of supplies they could use:
Diapers of all sizes
Toilet tissues, paper towels, and tissues
All Purpose cleaner
Paper plates, cups, and napkins (square)
HE laundry detergent
Ziploc bags and aluminum foil
Food storage containers
Grocery store gift certificates
Soap, shampoo, and conditioner
Feminine products (pads and tampons)
Toothpaste and toothbrushes
Razors and shaving cream
Coffee (regular; decaf) and creamer
Sugar and drink mixes
Canned and non-perishable foods
We are accepting new and/or clean, used clothing donations. These contributions will be given to Bill "Windwalker" Wentworth who will take them to the Native American Indian Reservations in Maine and Canada. Please no clothing with holes or pet hair. Again, you can bring your donation to the church and Pastor Dee Powers will collect them.
Both Etna and Canaan Fire Departments need sweat pants and sweat shirts to give out to people who, during a fire, are forced to flee their homes with no more than the shirt on their backs. It is not necessary to buy new. Clean, used items in good condition are very welcome. Please bring them to the church on any Sunday. Children’s sweats are also needed.
To all who have contributed in the past, or will contribute in the future, to any of the above causes, your gifts are truly a blessing. Thank you.

Example, for the September newsletter I need the information by August 12th. Please send info to me via email. You will find my email address (Rev. Janet Decker) at the bottom of the newsletter.
