Protestants claimed man didn't need a priest to talk to God (Luther, 1517AD), the founder of the Shakers, Mother Ann Lee had visions (1747), Mesmer used animal magnetism for healings (1774), and Swedenborg spoke with spirits and angels during meditations (1787). The Theosophical Society, a combination of Eastern religious traditions and Western esoteric teachings, was co-founded in 1875 by Madame Blavatsky, Colonel Olcutt and Will Quan Judge.
